Kot vsaka piramida se je na koncu tudi ta sesula: na njenem pogorišču so ostali milijardni dolgovi, več kot 11.000 upnikov, med katerimi so banke, dobrodelne organizacije in razni skladi.
Madoffovi vlagatelji so menili, da so sredstva pri njemu varno vložili saj je šlo za človeka, ki je bil ena najuglednejših osebnosti na Wall Streetu.
