Obema je bilo skupno, da je veliko vlagateljev na koncu ostalo brez denarja. Škandal okoli Bernarda Madoffa se je prav tako dogajal okoli upnikov, kjer pa je šlo za ogromne vsote denarja. Čeprav se je ta zgodba zgodila v ZDA je prizadela vse svetovne borze, poučna pa je zato, ker bi se lahko zgodila kjerkoli, tudi pri nas.
Knjiga z naslovom Afera Madoff: Prevara ter zlom največje finančne piramide je knjiga Petra Sanderja, v kateri je na 260-tih straneh opisana največja ponzijeva shema v vsej zgodovini, ki je »pogoltnila« okoli 50 milijard dolarjev denarja neopreznih vlagateljev.
Prikazani so prvi Madoffovi koraki v svetu borze, način kako je pridobival stranke in kako je več kot 30 let zlagoma nastajala največja finančna prevara. Kot vsaka piramida se je na koncu tudi ta sesula: na njenem pogorišču so ostali milijardni dolgovi, več kot 11.000 upnikov, med katerimi so banke, dobrodelne organizacije in razni skladi.
Madoffovi vlagatelji so menili, da so sredstva pri njemu varno vložili saj je šlo za človeka, ki je bil ena najuglednejših osebnosti na Wall Streetu. Bernard Madoff je bil eden od ustanoviteljev elektronskega borznega trga NASDAQ, nekaj časa celo njen predsednik, poleg tega, pa je zasedal pomembne položaje v različnih humanitarnih organizacijah. Prav ogromno zaupanje, ki sta ga Madoff in njegov hedge sklad Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities uživala med vlagatelji je tisto, kar to afero loči od ostalih.
Afera bo v prihodnjih letih in desetletjih zagotovo vplivala na borzna dogajanja in način vlaganja, obenem, pa je poučen primer za vsakogar med nami, ki je včasih pripravljen dati »roko v ogenj« za nekoga ali nekaj in se lahkomiselno loteva vlaganja v vrednostne papirje.
